Alternative line and Wash demonstration

I  recently delivered a demonstration to an art society, the technique was line and wash but with a differenence. I used conventional materials but applied all of the drawing with a twig/branch from a fallen tree. It is really engaging and the reults are great very organic, a long way from using an artists drawing pen.

Here is a picture of my latest work. Painted oil on board. Experimented with a much looser painterly technique for this one, thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Tree Mural

Just completed a mural on a courtyard wall. Full of challenges painting at this  scale, it was  a long hard day, but well worth it ,very please with the result. Really enjoyed doing nice to get out of the studio for the day.

Imagine Arts Distance learning Course

I am putting the finishing touches to a beginners drawing distance learning course. A ten week course spread over 20 weeks, with tutor mentoring on a weekly basis.

BP Portrait Award 2013

I have decided to enter the BP Portrait Award in 2013, so I am now contemplating on my approach for my submission. 


I have been thinking big, bold, loose and radical as my mantra.

Do not want to go down the super realistic route, not enough emotion captured both from the model or the artist.

Debut Exhibition for Crop-up Gallery

Just finishing preparation for 'Iluminate' the debut exhibition by Crop-Up Gallery. The exhibition is being held at backlit Gallery, Nottingham.

Crop-Up Gallery is an entirely student-run curatorial group, founded by The University of Nottingham Art History Students. Creating art exhibitions in a ‘pop-up’ gallery format, they will be establishing themselves amongst the Nottingham art scene and establishing new relationships with the University of Nottingham and the wider arts community.

Notts `Open Studios

Open weekend at Imagine Arts.
As part of Notts open Studios Imagine Arts is having an open weekend. Any one wishing to have a go at painting or drawing can come along and have a go.

Were is everyone? This is my second open weekend in a month and so far my visitor numbers across both events is 0.

 Finally Finished My Artist Statement

My journey as an artist is continually evolving and I am constantly looking to challenge my own perceptions to my own art practice.

As an artist I take inspiration from the natural world around us.  My work depicts the power and forces inflicted on our environment, the unpredictable motion of the ocean mid storm, the cascade of a water fall or the ripple of a brook.  I am drawn to shape and form of rocks, pebbles, standing stones and the way they are affected by what coexists around them.

I like to use acrylic in my work when capturing the raw power of nature, applying it broadly and quickly attempting to replicate the energy that I am trying to encapsulate.  Other mediums used in my art practice include watercolour and graphite. Frantically applied painterly and impasto techniques contrast with calmer more deliberately painted methods.

I am currently exploring using canes, sticks and twigs as a method of applying both wet and dry medium. I find this method of working very engaging, working on the floor gives a whole new perspective to the works. I am encouraged to explore further this method with other mediums.

Artist Statement - Why?

In preparation for an exhibition I spent last night toiling over writing an artist statement about myself. Finding it so difficult to put into words what, why and how I do what I do.

Do we really have to bare our soles as artists in order that people can understand and interpret our work!
